Using a gouge, chisel and knife to start with.

with the gouge I remove wood from the ouside inwards

a small gouge down the sides to trim off the excess

now it has lost that super chubby look

the walls have a lot nicer taper now

with the modified chisel I clean up in the tight turn

it looks reasonably even across the back
