an offcut of maple to protect the pegbox against slippage
the rough marks from the gouge
starting to move around the scroll
the light sure shows up the marks, the wood is difficult to remove evenly
the light brings out the inconsistency in the fluting
gain from the rear with a light scrape
this really shows lots of little craters from the gouge
the main gouge and scraper I used
starting to create the little circle in the heel. you can see the pencil circles
now it is starting to take shape but still requires refinement
a difficult are to remove cleanly as the grain gos in all directions and easy to split
the fluting from the front, though the light distorts the centre line
now from the rear, it is a bit of a trick to get everything in line and even and it is far from perfect
there is a bit more depth to the fluting on the back of the scroll, not on purpose it just happened that way from my uneven hands
a selection of scoll shots after a bit more cleaning up
i will have to retake this with more direct lighting as this light gives the feeling of the line being more crooked than it is
i like the figure in this wood
right side, they both look reasonably close to each other
the pegbox walls are still a little thick and I will take another 1 - 1.5 mm off each side. It is a pretty big scroll overall but the measurements on drawings list this models scroll as larger than most.
the scoll is looking nice in my eyes and I am pretty happy with it
I still have some fine cleaning of the wood to remove tool marks and smooth the surfaces
I like the base of the heel, nice and circular. I based this from a little picture in my head
Wow did I create this? I am pretty pleased with my first attempt and though it still has a bit more work it really looks the part.
